Dreaming of Vikings and Vineyards

Posted in: Weddings on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

Has it been so long since my last post? Dare I say I have been too busy … well it is true, I have had a really great wedding season and now with winter fast approaching I can finally sit back and take stock. I’ve met some really great people from all over who have journeyed to our shores to join their lives … what a special thing for them and every one with me has been a journey with them , and I take great pride in the part that I play in their day, and ensuring they have special memories to share for the rest of their lives with friends and family.

Journeying to Cape Town from Norway were Frank and Åsne, with their beautiful daughters and wonderful friends. We spent a great day together in the sun at Palmiet Valley Estate in Paarl, and they were over the moon when they got home and received their A3 Coffee Table book in the mail…..

The Wedding of Mario and Silvia

Posted in: Weddings on Thursday, January 16th, 2014

It’s been a busy time …. no excuse not to be chatting here, but many changes, many good things and have been working hard while closing off one year and welcoming in another.

What better way to close off one year than to share in the love and celebration of a beautiful beach wedding on an idyllic summer’s day in de Kelders. Hosted by Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Mario and Silvia from Switzerland chose a perfect day for their wedding, and Silvia was wearing a stunning red dress – beautifully made and guaranteed to stand out on that white beach sand!

We had a really great day with this wonderful, fun couple, and it was a very special time.

The Wedding of Tom and Jayne

Our summer seems to have been a little late in arriving, and we have had plenty of late-winter rainstorms, followed by gale force winds, and then suddenly summer was here ….. or not, as yet another cold front hit Cape Town, and hail storms affected the interior of South Africa.

You have to be rather brave to try and plan a perfect wedding day in the Cape in October …. do you get the Cape of Good Hope or do you get the Cape of Storms? Tom and Jayne ventured from the British Isles to tie the knot in Cape Town and I’ll admit I was slightly nervous as another storm lashed at Cape Town. I put on a brave face, put in  my order for warm weather with some clouds …. need those clouds for beautiful soft light … and of  course a spectacular sunset.
The wedding was to take place at the charismatic 2inn1 Kensington, one of my favourite Cape Town guest houses, with minister Walter Schwaer at 3pm, and the weather had clouded over and luckily gave us some relief from the 30 degree plus heat that was lurking around … but it looked too thick to guarantee any sort of sunset in the evening.

We had a lovely small intimate ceremony with Lion’s Head behind us and agreed that we would take a chance on the sides of Table Mountain or Signal Hill for some sunset images over the ocean ……

Later in the evening, the light was lovely, but the wind was rising … still, can’t have everything and we got some great photos along the road with the beautiful chincherees in the foreground and the twelve apostles and Lion’s Head in the background.

We headed over the back of Signal Hill and were treated to, not only windless conditions, but a most beautiful sunset, and on the bay ocean side a full rainbow above us, just to top it all off!!!

What a wonderful day!! Couldn’t have ordered it any better!

Thanks to Milan for assisting, and wishing Tom and Jayne everything of the best in their married life together

Seasonal Beauty

Posted in: Landscapes on Monday, August 26th, 2013

Julie and Dave West Coast National ParkSouth Africa is a scenic wonderland, and the vastness of the country means that you can travel far and wide to discover beauty … and sometimes it is almost on your doorstep. In the Cape we are rewarded after our cold and wet winter with a spectacular blooming of spring flowers.

Once can only imagine what the landscape looked like prior to agriculture in areas like the Overberg and Karoo. We have small protected pockets of land where it is just a joy to sit and wonder at the beauty of it all – surely some vast being must have sowed seeds in giant swathes of colour to create this magical wonderland.

The West Coast National Park is approximately an hour and a half from Cape Town and what is important is to choose a day when the sun is shining, otherwise the flowers stay tightly curled up in bed and refuse to show their beautiful faces!

Our day started off grey but the slight breeze chased the clouds away and by 12 o’ clock there was enough sunshine to convince the flowers to come out and show off… it was well worth the trip, and I don’t remember that the profusion of colour was as magnificent on my previous trips here.

Black & White Cats

Posted in: Wildlife on Monday, August 5th, 2013

These days it seems we are constantly bombarded by highly saturated colours – advertising, movies, and even natural wildlife programs are sharpened and over saturated by the settings our TVs (or we) choose! Sometimes, the drama of a moment captured and shared can be told more strongly when all the distractions are removed and you are left face to face with the essence of the image. For me this is especially true when I come across a regal feline presence.

The malevolent glare of a fully grown male Kalahari lion sends a shiver down your spine when you appreciate the power and beauty that lies within.

A cheetah using a tree as a vantage point to search for possible prey seems almost fragile in it’s fight to survive in a hostile environment, and yet, when it unleashes a burst of speed, the marvel of this creation is a joy to behold.

Looking down from it’s perch, a male Leopard pauses to inspect you interrupting it’s lunch and the look tells you of the confidence of this survivor.

Wildlife 004 _D316490-Edit

An almost pleading look from this lioness conveyed her absolute inner beauty and we saw that she was heavily pregnant and was looking for a safe place to have her babies. I felt we were intruding on something so special, and another cycle of life was about to begin the hard fight for survival.

Wildlife 006 _D316638-Edit

Following a brief and fruitless pursuit of some Impala rams, this cheetah seemed almost embarrassed to have caused such a fuss, and have no reward for it at the end. Such is life for the hunters and the hunted, and the cycle of life continues.

Wildlife 002 _D327132-Edit

This amazing female leopard was moving her cubs to a safer den, ever mindful of roaming lions and hyenas. She surveyed us with a watchful eye, but seemed content that we meant her no harm. When a vulture came close to her kill, she immediately dragged the kill down from the tree and moved it somewhere else, knowing, it seems, that the hyenas would be following close behind.

Some magical moments I have been witness too, and somehow, just seem more vivid in black and white ….

Family Photography

Steven and Jennifer Huege Grootbos SessionOne of the things that I really enjoying doing is photographing families – I mean if you can photograph weddings you can photograph ANYBODY right?

Weeeeell, not that simple – photographing children is seldom easy, and finding the right balance between entertaining and capturing images is needed.

Steven and Jennifer Huege Grootbos SessionI had a really great session at one of my favourite destinations, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve (www.grootbos.com) with Steve and Jen and little Jody from the US of A. We played in the beautiful gardens and then headed on down to the beach, and got some really great images in spite of the gloomy grey weather …. which I tell the ladies is a girl’s best friend for portrait photography!

Steven and Jennifer Huege Grootbos SessionMy thanks to Christof for helping with the lighting equipment, which was basically a Nikon SB900 speedlight in a Lastolight softbox on a monopod, triggered by a pocketwizard TT5.

The final results were compiled into a beautiful A3 Photobook and an A1 Canvas print which were couriered across to America for the clients …. The story had a very happy ending 🙂

A Brand New World …..

Posted in: General on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013

WhalesWell, it is for me anyway!

Welcome to my brand new website – I’m really excited to have a new home to show you what I’ve been doing lately, showcase some of my work, and chat to you about what I do and why (even if I am not always so sure myself!) Looking forward to sharing with you all on this here, my blog, linking to my facebook site and generally keeping in touch with all my friends out there.

I’m really blessed to have had a great year so far, with many exciting projects, returning clients, new clients … and in the process I’ve made a whole bunch of new friends. I’ve also been privileged to have learnt from some of the greats in this business in the last year – Brett Florens, Johan Pretorius, and just the other day Joe McNally – what an absolute pleasure and very humbling that these guys, who are iconic in the photography field continue to share their hard-earned experience and know-how with us, that we can grow as photographers too – a heartfelt thank you!

And thank you! For dropping in, having a look around, and I hope that you will keep coming back and bring your friends!

I include an image of some of those gentle giants who right now are ending their perilous journey from Antarctic waters to the cost of South Africa to have their babies … what a joy to be able to witness this, and good testimony that we are getting some things right!

See you soon, David
